The village, an agricultural centre in the northern Montferrat area, is situated at the extreme border of the provinces of Alexandria and Vercelli.
An ancient possession of the bishops of Asti,it was later passed on to the Montferrat marquises. Agriculture remains the area's main economic source, producing prevalently grapes, wheat, corn, vegetables and fodder. Built in the eleventh century and beautifully restored, the imposing Castle with its gothic tower soaring over 40 meters in height, is encircled by an immense park. One of Montferrat's most famous and imposing castles, it rises on top of a hill, with its high tower and mighty facades. Enlarged in the fifteenth century and seriously damaged by the French in 1631, it was restored in the late eighteenth century. Inside, a large fifteenth-century courtyard is preserved and 21 portraits of feudal lords, painted during in the eighteenth century by Peter Francesco Guala, may be seen in the central hall. Then there are the twelfth-century church of San Gottardo, with votive frescoes from the fifteenth century, and the church of San Lorenzo Martire, built in the late 1600s, where a portait from the Moncalvo school may be seen. Camino's hospitality is noteworthy: hotels, residences, agritourism farms, and bed & breakfasts.
